Winter’s a hangin’ on

What a surprise to start the day!  The folks at Weather Channel had removed snow from their local forecast for today.  Surely, it won’t last very long, but this is pretty significant for the morning.  Check our YouTube site for a new video.

Upon opening the garage door this morning, this is what greeted me!

This snow will likely slow the progress of the brothers of Shepard Construction in their work at the Burke farm.  Just yesterday, they spun a track off one of the bulldozers, but still they were able to get the last of the standing trees down, and the last of the stumps dug out.  Now, just a ‘clean-up’ remains to be done.  Plus, extending a tile (that used to unload in the woods) to a Kessinger Ditch outlet, and installing a culvert for draining surface water.

We asked for a visit from an official of the Natural Resources and Conservation Service (NRCS) to make an on-site visit to clearly define the border of the wetland that will remain at Burke.  That NRCS official came last Wednesday to show us exactly where the border of the wetland meets the new corn field.  Now, we are more confident that we have protected the wetland in the proper way.

This snowy day also dampens some of our enthusiasm for getting started on field work.   Maybe we won’t bring home the soybean drill on Thursday from its storage location at the Huey farm.  Perhaps it will stay there until there is a good, dry day next week.

But the corn planter will have to be hooked up in the next few days, at least temporarily, so that the dealer’s service man can install some new software into the control system, and a video camera on the back.  These cameras are becoming more and more important as the implements we use are now big enough to block your view to the rear.  When you are traveling down 4-lane US 50, and you want to make a left turn, it’s comforting to be able to see what’s coming up behind you!

Yes, #Plant14 is coming… just doesn’t look like it this morning!
