The clean-up has begun

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

After harvest and DCB planting finished up yesterday, the clean-up of the equipment must take place.  There are days worth of work involved.  We started today with the air drill.  It gets stored at the Huey farm, so by cleaning it first, we can get it put away, and out of the way here.

Brandon and Nicolas begin the process of cleaning the air drill. When it's done, it will be placed in storage at the Huey farm.

Later in the morning, Nicolas cleans the 640FD platform with the high-pressure washer.

After this, in no specific order, the combines and headers will be washed.  Also the grain cart and tractors.  Then, when the wheat is all delivered, the dryer and surrounding area will be cleaned.  Lastly, the trucks will be washed and waxed before fall harvest.

We still have some riparian areas to spray to hold down the woody species and johnsongrass.  John has a little corn and the DCB to spray soon with herbicide.  And the regular soybeans will need one more application of Roundup next month.

The first several days post-harvest seem more hectic than harvest.  During gathering in of the crop, you have a singular focus, but after it’s done, there are many things that need attention, and it seems all-at-once.  But we will keep nibbling on these tasks and by next week, we’ll be breathing easier.

It’s a good feeling to have the wheat done and the DCB planted…especially so to be ahead of  this rainy spell we’re having this week.
