Corn is finished

Tuesday, October 4, 2016

Yesterday evening, right at dark, we finished up harvesting the corn crop, working at the Burke farm.   The yields there were a little disappointing, but overall, we are pleased with and grateful for the corn crop.  John has it ‘packed away’ in the storage bins here at the main farm, waiting to deliver the October and November sales contracts.  This is the earliest corn finish in our memory.

Here, we are driving across the south end rows of the main field at Burke. We're headed to the east field, across Petersburg road. Those 11 acres were the last ones of #harvest16

Today, we will return to harvesting soybeans.  It appears it’s going to be a nice, warm, and pleasant day.  It’s busy here this morning… two loads of corn to GPC, replacing a drive chain on the 8230, servicing the tracks on the grain cart, cleaning out the distributor on the top of the old grain leg.   Lots to do before going to the soybean field.  Larry is out with the MX290 tractor for the day, planting cover crop strips.

The pink 'bees wings' accumulate inside the cavity of the distributor at the top of the old grain leg. John is clearing them away this morning. Yes, he is wearing a safety harness.

Let’s hope the Lord sends us many warm, dry days to get the soybean crop brought in!
